Pouring it Out

After my dad passed away last week, I was unsure of how to feel. I mostly felt at peace because he was sick, and he was old. He had lived through the loss of his wife, my mother, 3 years ago and was ready to join her. And I felt okay with that. It felt promising even, for a girl with little faith.

But after the memorial service yesterday, I mostly just feel alone. What do you do as a young twenty-something, in the midst of the most confusing time of her life? We are buying our first home. Eventually having kids, maybe? So who do I get to turn to, to ask questions when I am lost? To call in the middle of the night when I feel like giving up? To show up unannounced and know that they are unconditionally happy to see me?

Even if my dad was sick and old, he was still my dad and that meant something to me, even if he didn't always know who I was. But my brother said something in his eulogy yesterday that struck me. He was talking about how sad he was for Dad and for his son that they wouldn't have a relationship because his son is so young. But then he realized that he would be mostly sad for himself, because Brady won't understand that he doesn't get that relationship with his Grandpa and therefore wouldn't think he was missing out. It is a purely selfish reason to feel sad that Dad won't get to be there for my new experiences, or that Mom has already missed some of them. My parents aren't sad... because they aren't alive. I am sad for me. But I think I should get to be. This is where the whole, "who am I, what am I doing" aspect of my emotions come to bat. I don't feel like a whole person anymore.

But Joey has been there for everything. He knew my mom, and he watched her die. He knew my dad, he said goodbye to him too. He promised them both that he would take care of me and I know without a doubt that he wasn't saying it for show. He really is going to make sure that I know I am loved every second of every day. And by god, I am going to make it difficult. I know me. I know how I act in the face of adversity. I shut down. I want space. I need to lash out, to feel the guilt that follows. Because I get numb. And any emotion is better than emptiness. And I hate that I do it. I hate even more that I do it to him. But he understands, and he still loves me. Unconditionally.

I can honestly say that I am ready to put this part of my life behind me. No, I will never forget my parents. I will never not love them, either of them, for as long as I am still alive. They are a part of me and I am forever grateful. But now, now I need to focus on myself and Joey. I need to make this chapter of our life even better. And what better way to start out than with the purchase of our first home? A place that we can call home, we can hopefully start a family in, even if we just give that dog thing a try again. I am ready to grab life by the horns and stop playing chicken with my emotions.

I won't give up. Even if the skies get rough.

What a week...

This has been such a roller coaster week. I am still really upset about it and can't really think about the decisions we had to make without completely crying. Basically, we adopted a puppy and then found that it was a terrible decision for our life right now. We bonded with him for a week but then had to take him back to the shelter. I feel like a monster, but little Leo deserves a better home than what we could have provided for him. He was a bright light in our lives, but he was also way more work that we ever could have imagined. But I want to end my talking about Leo on a happy note... so here is a cute picture of the fluffy little man that peed all over my carpets. ;)

But here are some other things that happened this week that made me happy:
  • Seeing Ben Folds in concert with my lovely friend Kirstie. He performed a show with the St. Louis Symphony last Sunday... it was incredible. Honestly the coolest thing I've seen. He played an entire show by himself on the piano, with his entire set scored to include an orchestra. He played "Gracie" and it was phenomenal. That song seriously makes me tear up for no reason, and hearing it on Sunday was magical. (lame!)

  • Joey wrote me a love note (okay email... but it's 2011 come on!) since I've been so down about the puppy. I'm obviously not going to share the note with you, but I'll just let you know that I love him very, very, very much. On November 23rd we'll have been together 6 years, with 1.5 of those years as a married couple. That is CRAZY! :)

A surprise date in Forest Park: Summer 2006
  • Kirstie, as mentioned above, and I are planning a sweet Ornament Party to kick off the holidays! If it turns out a success, I hope it can become a tradition and our Christmas trees will be forever filled with homemade tokens of love from friends. (gag!) Seriously, I'm gagging. But it was cute so I'm keeping it. It's fun since Pinterest is sooooo crazy explosively huge right now. Finding a cute DIY ornament for each of us to make will not be hard. The plan is for everyone to have enough supplies to make everyone at the party an ornament, and we'll all leave with one from everyone there. I think it's an awesome idea and definitely a great way to spend a Sunday while the boys (ahem, men) watch football.

I think I am going to try making the one below, although it might be a little extreme if we have more than 5 people show up ;)

But I made my Felt Flower Wreath using these flowers and had a TON of fun doing it... and felt is really cheap at Hobby Lobby. I should have pins leftover somewhere from the wedding... maybe... and then yarn is mega cheap too. The most expensive thing I'll buy is probably those foam balls - those are PRICEY!
  • This is a little materialistic..... but I'm super excited about my new Bath and Body Works Christmas scented soaps. Fact: Christmas scents are the best.

  • Finally.... HARRY POTTER PART 2, YA'LL!

I want to be a total nerd and watch all 8 movies back-to-back(-to-back), but then I stumbled across this little downer.... but... I still think I could do it! ;)

Whew! I think that was a pretty lengthy blog post for not having blogged in almost 2 weeks!

Until next time, nerds! <3

Matt Nathanson - 10.18.11

I really don't even know how to begin this blog. In fact, I've actually been putting this off for a couple of days.I just don't think what I am going to say will accurately portray the emotions I felt at this concert. Or actually any feelings that I get upon hearing anything related to Matt Nathanson.

I've been a fan of this man since, oh I'd say probably 2001. That was my freshman year of high school. I was 14 years old. I was a huge nerd. I also loved Good Charlotte. I'm now 24 years old. I'm a married woman. A college graduate. I have learned that Good Charlotte is (and was) terrible. (I am probably still a huge nerd.)

The only similarity is that my love for Matt Nathanson has stayed strong. Beneath These Fireworks has remained my favorite album, although his most recent Modern Love is a strong contender. Some Mad Hope was phenomenal, but in my opinion, Beneath These Fireworks is the best thing out there.

This would only be my second time seeing him in concert.

He came to town for a special show at a local University (with another one of my long-time favorites- Jack's Mannequin) in 2009 and a friend got me and Joey into the show at the student price. Honestly, that was the best show of my life. It was a more intimate setting because it was only really accessible to students and faculty and it had limited public knowledge. The set was shorter, obviously, but seeing those two in concert together was really a life-changing experience.

This show was up there in terms of mind-blowing. Seeing him in his element, singing the songs I know every word to and have felt every emotion for... this is what music is all about. This is what is supposed to happen when a musician or artist is your "favorite"- an absolute connection to the person on that stage. I even felt a connection with his band. They were making these songs come alive. They were all my best friends that night, even if they didn't know I was in the crowd.

I am so grateful I was able to go to this show, and at my favorite venue in the city. It was a truly magical night and I hope that you get the chance to see your favorite artist/band/musician at some point in your life. It really is the most incredible experience.

I saw a photo of the set list on Twitter*, so I am posting a copy here.
*This is not my picture.

Honestly, go check his stuff out. You won't be disappointed. If you are disappointed, then I'm sorry you feel that way.... but I hope you can at least agree that seeing music come alive is one of the best things out there in this sad, sad world. And to that, I drink.

Who is your favorite band or artist? Have you seen them in concert? Was it the best thing....ever? Leave me a comment below!
